The Living Literacy Learn To Read Curriculum | PDF
A great starting point for any child learning to read. This curriculum is the English component to the Foundation One A Day Curriculum. Great to use alongside the other One A Day subjects or as an additional learn-to-read resource.
The Happy Days Living Literacy Approach is a gentle, story-rich Foundation English curriculum designed to help young children develop confidence in reading and writing through meaningful, repeated exposure rather than pressure or rushed instruction. Built around the Living Literacy approach, this curriculum recognises that children learn best when literacy is naturally woven into everyday life through stories, conversations, play, hands-on experiences and purposeful practice.
Instead of relying on lengthy formal lessons, children are introduced to letters, sounds and early reading skills through carefully planned alphabet chunks that allow them to begin building real words from the very beginning. Each unit combines explicit phonics instruction with practical activities, worksheets, notebook prompts and games that reinforce learning in a calm, enjoyable and developmentally appropriate way.
The 162-page curriculum follows a flexible structure, allowing families to complete approximately one hour of literacy each dayusing any combination of core lessons, notebook activities, hands-on learning or game worksheets. There is no single prescribed pathway. Parents are encouraged to adapt the curriculum to suit their child's readiness, interests and learning style while continually revisiting literacy concepts through gentle repetition.
Throughout the year, students develop foundational skills in phonological awareness, letter and sound knowledge, handwriting, blending, segmenting, early reading, vocabulary, oral language, comprehension and beginning writing. Rich literature, meaningful conversations and real-life literacy experiences remain at the heart of every lesson, helping children understand that reading is more than a school subject—it is a lifelong tool for communication, discovery and enjoyment.
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 (Foundation English), Living Literacy provides a balanced foundation across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands while maintaining a warm, low-pressure philosophy that nurtures capable, confident and joyful readers.
Living Literacy isn't about rushing children to read. It's about surrounding them with words, gently teaching one step at a time, and knowing that confidence grows through stories, connection and consistent exposure.
