Learning to read shouldn’t feel like a race.
Children deserve to learn without feeling rushed, compared or pressured to meet someone else’s timeline. That belief is at the heart of something I’ve been developing called The Happy Days Living Literacy Approach. The updated One A Day Kindergarten curriculum has been updated to showcase this learn to read approach throughout.
Children still need strong foundations. They need to be gently and clearly taught letters, sounds, blending, handwriting, vocabulary and comprehension.
But I don’t believe literacy should begin and end at the school table.
The Happy Days Living Literacy Approach brings together structured teaching and the natural, joyful learning that happens throughout ordinary family life.
It’s not about sitting back and hoping reading will happen on its own. It’s about teaching the foundations well, reinforcing them naturally and creating a home where words, books and conversation are simply part of the day.
Then, without pressure, we give children the time to become ready.
Some children will read early. Some will take longer. That doesn’t mean they’re behind.
We keep teaching. We keep reading. We keep noticing. We keep encouraging.
And in time, it will come.
