The Creative Builder elective unit has 11 hands-on project-based lessons that encourage primary-aged students to design, build and create using a variety of everyday craft materials. Through engaging maker challenges, students develop creativity, problem-solving, planning and fine motor skills while producing exciting projects they can proudly display or use.
Throughout the unit, students explore a wide range of construction and craft techniques including clay modelling, cardboard engineering, simple STEM design, weaving, collage, model building and decorative art. Projects include clay creature pots, paddle pop stick catapults, cardboard animal dioramas, glitter masks, rubber band box guitars, craft matchstick houses, picture frames, treasure boxes, clay plaques, photo frames and woven art boards.
Designed with colourful infographic-style instructions, each project clearly outlines the materials required, step-by-step construction, extension ideas, practical tips and the key skills being developed. The activities promote creativity, design thinking, construction skills, planning, perseverance and confidence while giving students the freedom to personalise every creation. Adult supervision is recommended where hot glue guns or similar tools are used.
