Air Dry Clay Creations: A High School Visual Arts Unit (Grade 7-12)
Discover the timeless art of sculpting with clay while exploring creativity, history, design and practical craftsmanship.
High School Clay Creations is a hands-on visual arts unit designed for students who enjoy creating with their hands and expressing ideas through three-dimensional art. Using air-dry clay, students will progress from foundational hand-building techniques to more detailed decorative sculptures inspired by ancient civilisations, architecture, nature and contemporary artists.
Throughout the unit, students will learn essential clay techniques including pinch pots, coil building, slab construction, carving, embossing, texture creation, joining methods, relief work and sculptural finishing. Once their creations have dried, students will experiment with painting techniques, weathered finishes, faux ceramic effects and protective sealing to produce beautiful display pieces.
Each project encourages students to research historical and cultural influences while developing artistic skills, design thinking and problem-solving abilities. Students will investigate the use of clay throughout history—from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and China to Indigenous pottery traditions and modern ceramic art—discovering how clay has been used for both practical and decorative purposes across cultures.
The unit also incorporates cross-curricular learning opportunities through history, health, digital technologies and entrepreneurship. Students will photograph their finished artwork, document their creative process, build a digital portfolio, design exhibition labels, create promotional material, produce gallery catalogues, edit showcase videos and even plan a mock gallery exhibition where they market and "sell" their work. These authentic tasks provide meaningful opportunities to strengthen writing, research, digital media and presentation skills alongside artistic development.
With twenty carefully sequenced projects ranging from intermediate to advanced, students are encouraged to work independently while continually refining their creativity, craftsmanship and confidence. Clear step-by-step instructions, practical tips and extension challenges ensure learners are supported while still being challenged to produce high-quality artistic work they can proudly display.
Whether creating textured wall art, decorative vessels, sculptural animals, historical replicas or contemporary home décor, this engaging unit transforms simple clay into lasting works of art while nurturing imagination, perseverance and creative excellence. Air-dry clay provides an accessible alternative to kiln-fired ceramics while still allowing students to practise authentic sculpting techniques and decorate finished pieces with acrylic paints and sealers.
