Economics & Business: The Corner Store Files is a practical Grade 7 unit that introduces students to how consumers, businesses and the economy work through relatable, real-world situations. Using the ongoing setting of a local corner store, students explore needs and wants, consumer choices, entrepreneurship, types of work and income, business structures, consumer rights, scarcity, opportunity cost and responsible business decision-making.
Throughout the unit, students learn to think like young entrepreneurs. They investigate business issues, gather and organise information, interpret data and trends, consider cause-and-effect relationships, and weigh costs and benefits before making decisions.
The Start-Up Studio project runs alongside the lessons, allowing students to progressively develop their own small-business idea. They identify their target customer, consider jobs and income, research potential issues, develop branding and marketing, design a flyer and ultimately prepare a final business pitch using evidence and appropriate economic and business terminology.
Designed to support Australian Curriculum Version 9 Grade 7 Economics and Business, the unit combines explicit teaching, engaging scenarios, investigation skills and practical application so students learn not only what economic and business concepts mean, but how they apply in everyday life,
