‘Beat the Hype’ is a fun, practical and highly engaging Grade 8 Health & Physical Education curriculum aligned with the Australian Curriculum Version 9 and built from a conservative world-view.
Set around the slightly ridiculous world of Hype Town, students explore real-life health topics through stories, investigations, projects, practical challenges, discussions and movement activities. Rather than simply telling teens what is “good” or “bad”, the curriculum encourages them to pause, ask questions, seek wise advice, recognise influences and make thoughtful choices for themselves.
Across 30 weeks, students explore nutrition, sleep, energy, habits, identity, puberty and change, media and body image, emotions, stress, resilience, relationships, boundaries and consent, peer pressure, help-seeking, alcohol and vaping (age appropriately referenced), safety, fitness, movement skills, games, inclusion, outdoor challenges and lifelong physical activity.
The curriculum includes a mixture of short-response activities, questionnaires, research tasks, practical investigations, cooking, projects, longer writing, physical challenges and personal reflection, finishing with a Real-Life Health Plan where students identify realistic habits and goals they want to carry forward.
Designed specifically for homeschooling families, Beat the Hype keeps learning flexible, conversational and connected to everyday life while providing clear evidence of learning across both the Personal, Social and Community Health and Movement and Physical Activity strands.

Australian Curriculum v9 content descriptor alignment
Visual Arts – Grade 8: Through the Lens is a practical, photography-based Visual Arts curriculum designed around the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Grade 8 Visual Arts content descriptors. Students explore how artists use composition, viewpoint, light, colour, texture, shape, portraiture, editing and visual storytelling to communicate ideas and meaning.
Rather than approaching Visual Arts through traditional drawing and painting, this unit uses photography as the main creative medium, making it accessible with either a camera or smartphone. Students learn through engaging teaching chapters, practical photography challenges, artist investigations, journal reflections and guided creative activities before bringing their learning together in the major project.
Throughout the course, students investigate photographers including Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Cindy Sherman, while developing an understanding of artistic practice, ethical photography, copyright, attribution, respectful representation and First Nations Australian artists. The major project guides students step-by-step from developing an idea and researching artists through experimentation, shooting, critique, refinement, curation and presentation of a cohesive 8–12 image photographic series.
With assessment rubrics, portfolio guidance, glossary pages and curriculum alignment included, Through the Lens provides a complete and creative approach to Year 8 Visual Arts for homeschool students.
